Huddersfield were denied a vital three points at home to West Ham at the weekend thanks to a late Felipe Anderson goal.
The Terriers have made a dismal start to the new campaign but took an early lead against the Hammers with Alex Pritchard scoring the first goal scored at home by Huddersfield so far this season. David Wagner’s men were unfortunate not to further their advantage, hitting both the post and the crossbar as well as seeing claims for a penalty turned down. Manuel Pellegrini’s men eventually equalised through Anderson to deny Huddersfield their second win in six days.
The result leaves Huddersfield in the Premier League relegation zone, and Wagner has a mountain to climb to steer his side away from danger. The Terriers have been conceding far too many goals which has led to reports that Wagner could look to sign Burnley goalkeeper – Tom Heaton. Heaton has found himself out of favour with the Clarets and is wanted by the Terriers.
However, if Huddersfield are in the market for a new ‘keeper, they should turn their attention to Liverpool’s Simon Mignolet. Valued at £9m by Transfermarkt, the Belgium international has fallen down the pecking order at Anfield after Jurgen Klopp chose to spend £67m to sign Alisson Becker from Roma in the summer. Mignolet was expected to leave the club but stayed put with Loris Karius departing instead.
With Klopp promoting Caoimhin Kelleher to the first-team, the 30-year-old could be allowed to leave in January. Mignolet thrived during his time with Sunderland and established himself as a top shot-stopper in the Premier Leauge – he was crucial to securing their safety in the division. Moving to an environment with less pressure could help him rediscover his best form and stop Huddersfield from conceding so many goals.
Mignolet is desperate to be playing regularly, and the signing could prove to be a masterstroke from Wagner.
