da spicy bet: Roma are eyeing a swoop for Porto midfielder Hector Herrera in January as they look to beat Tottenham in the hunt for his services, according to Corriere Dello Sport via CalcioMercato.
What’s the word?
Mauricio Pochettino is eyeing changes to his Tottenham midfield ahead of the likely loss of Mousa Dembele next summer when his contract comes to a close, and a number of potential targets have been touted in the press.
One of those is Porto’s Mexico international Hector Herrera, also a target for North London rivals Arsenal, but Correire Dello Sport via CalcioMercato states both Premier League sides could miss out in the hunt to Serie A outfit Roma.
The Italian club’s president James Pallotta has given the club the green light to swoop for the 29-year-old in January, where a bargain deal could be secured as Herrera’s contract with Porto is due to expire at the end of the season.
Should Spurs be concerned?
While Herrera’s experience could prove to be beneficial as a replacement for Dembele, Spurs should really be aiming a lot higher than the Mexico international if they are to bring an end to their long wait for trophies.

The 29-year-old would not necessarily slot straight into a midfield role in Pochettino’s side as the Lilywhites have the likes of Dele Alli, Eric Dier, Christian Eriksen, Harry Winks and Luke Amos at the club, so pursuing another target would be a better move.
With a number of strong options, a better choice for Spurs would be to swoop for a young talent who can develop behind the scenes at White Hart Lane while earning small tastes of first-team action, allowing someone like Winks to thrive in Dembele’s absence.
