da bet vitoria: Following the signing of Jannik Vestergaard from Borussia Monchengladbach this summer and having lost none of his other centre-backs, Southampton manager Mark Hughes has five options to choose between this season.
Based on the opening four Premier League matches this term, it seems obvious that Vestergaard and Hoedt – who has started every top flight match since Hughes took charge in March – is the Welshman’s preferred combination in a back four.
That is a system Saints have started to use on a regular basis having preferred a formation that included three centre-backs at the end of the previous campaign and against Burnley at St Mary’s on the opening day, but now competition for places at the heart of the backline is even more fierce.
Poland international Jan Bednarek appears to be the fifth-choice option seeing as he has failed to make the 18-man squad for their previous three Premier League fixtures, and it seems Hughes is unlikely to pick him anytime soon unless for injuries and suspensions.
That leaves Vestergaard, Hoedt, Jack Stephens and Maya Yoshida, who impressed for Japan at the 2018 at the World Cup and earns £50,000-a-week at Southampton according to Spotrac, competing for two spots.

While Hoedt certainly looks to have improved in recent weeks following a difficult debut campaign at St Mary’s, he has shown that he is still prone to errors, and Yoshida would surely complement Vestergaard more given he is undoubtedly quicker than his Dutch teammate.
