Celtic captain Scott Brown believes a deal for David Turnbull would be fantastic for the club and for the Motherwell man, as reported by The Scottish Sun.
What’s he said?
Turnbull’s move from the Steelmen to Celtic Park was thought to be on the rocks late last week after the Hoops publicly let fans know that negotiations on a contract had stalled despite agreeing a transfer fee with Motherwell.
However, The Scottish Sun report on Tuesday that the move is again imminent and comments from Hoops leader Brown certainly suggest he’ll be a welcome member of the squad.
How can Celtic improve next season? A Hoops fan tells us how in the video below…
As quoted by the paper, the 33-year-old said:
“I think David would be fantastic. I think that it would be the right club to come to given how we develop players into top-quality players.
Look at myself and James Forrest. There’s Callum McGregor and Kieran Tierney who have all come through. We are all Scottish lads. We’ve had fantastic coaches all the way through youth level and now we have coaches who have learned under great managers and we have got a great manager as well.
It would be a great place for him to come and learn, to play in front of 60,000 fans, win trophies and play in the Champions League.
He has got that winning mentality. He has been fantastic in some of the games I have seen him play. He was Motherwell’s Player of the Year, Young Player of the Year and their top goalscorer.”
Turnbull’s development
Celtic’s Scottish core to the side often goes overlooked, but Brown is right to point out that three of the most important players at the club are homegrown, having thrived under the coaching set-up at Lennoxtown.
A concern for the Motherwell man could be a lack of first-team action but there is definitely room in the Hoops’ long season, that often spans 60+ games, for the player to get enough football to make an impression.
The player has also already demonstrated he can produce on a consistent basis in the Scottish Premiership, with Brown pointing out his immense contributions at ‘Well last term, so Neil Lennon will likely have little fear throwing him into games when needed.
All signs point to this potential deal being beneficial for all parties – Motherwell receive a record fee, Turnbull has the chance to make his name at a bigger club and Celtic get fresh ideas and hunger in the middle of the park.
