It seems that the transfer of Keylor Navas from Real Madrid to Paris Saint-Germain is edging ever closer to its completion, if the reports coming from La Nacion are to be believed. But is that really the right move for Los Blancos at this moment in time? Unfortunately not.
What’s the word, then?
This transfer seems to have been in the workshop for quite some time now and the newspaper from Costa Rica first came out with the update that Paris Saint-Germain were indeed very close to completing this deal. The news was quickly echoed and confirmed by sources in Madrid with both AS and Marca reporting on the story too.
And as Navas comes ever closer to the end of his five-year stay at Santiago Bernabeu, there is still this feeling in the air that Real Madrid might not be making the right call after all. The Costa Rican between the sticks has been a faithful servant to the club but more importantly, he’s been a big piece of their past success, especially on the biggest stage of them all in the Champions League.
Are they making the right decision with this one, then?
Losing a key piece
Maybe the best sign that Real Madrid were preparing for the future without the shot-stopper was the purchase of Thibaut Courtois from Chelsea. But Navas was Real Madrid’s hero. The 32-year-old has featured in all three of the Galacticos’ recent Champions League finals and played a hand in helping them win all three in a row.

Of course, that’s without taking into account all the other games, in fact, a total of 162 matches throughout his stay in the Spanish capital. Whenever he was called into action, he performed and there’s a reason Zidane kept him in the team throughout all those years of glory.
This decision to let him go to PSG starts making even less sense when we take into account both the current state of the club, with all of their issues they need to resolve as a team, and the man who’s supposed to replace Navas between the sticks.
Courtois has somewhat been underwhelming so far in the white shirt and while he still may improve, losing a reliable plan B in this time of need should not really be the move Florentino Perez pulls next.
They can only hope it doesn’t come back to haunt them in the future.
