The Czech goalkeeper joined Leverkusen in 2023, making six Bundesliga appearances under Xabi Alonso, and is set to depart the club already. As per , Leverkusen have agreed a deal with PSV to sell Kovar who is looking to become a first-choice number one on a permanent basis. While it marks the second time Ten Hag has shifted Kovar, with Brentford's Mark Flekken arriving to become the main option between the sticks, it was inevitable Kovar would have to leave for regular game time.

Ten Hag has been tasked with rebuilding a Leverkusen side that has been torn apart by the departure of manager Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid and key first-team players Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz to Liverpool. The Dutch manager, who despite winning the League and FA Cup, endured a torrid time at United and will be hoping to repair his managerial reputation in Germany. The moving on of apparent deadwood will be necessary if Ten Hag is to unleash a revolution at side pipped to the Bundesliga title by Bayern Munich last season.
