da betsson: Manchester United will look to continue their impressive start to the Premier League season when they host Everton at Old Trafford on Sunday.
da luck: The Red Devils go into the weekend top of the standings having won three and drawn one of their opening four fixtures, with the latter coming in a 2-2 draw away at Stoke City last weekend – the first time they had dropped points and conceded.
Jose Mourinho’s men got their Champions League campaign off to a positive start as they beat FC Basel at Old Trafford on Tuesday night, although they lost Paul Pogba to a hamstring injury and he will now miss the clash against the Toffees.
Meanwhile, the Toffees are expected to have a good campaign themselves following a big summer of spending in the transfer market, and they will know that they need to pick up results at stadiums like Old Trafford if they want to have a chance of challenging for the top four.
Ronald Koeman’s men certainly need a pick-me-up following some disappointing performances and results in recent weeks.
Here are three reasons Manchester United will fail to beat Everton on Sunday…
Their recent record against Everton
Back in the mid-to-late ‘90s, Manchester United used to beat Everton in the Premier League on a regular basis but that has changed slightly in recent seasons.
Both of last term’s meetings ended in 1-1 draws, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic rescuing a point at Old Trafford in April after Phil Jagielka had given the visitors the lead.
The Red Devils have also taken just eight points from the last 15 available at home against the Toffees, and that recent record suggests they could struggle to take all three points again on Sunday.
Everton are likely to focus on defence
Following successive 3-0 defeats against Tottenham Hotspur and Atalanta in the Premier League and Europa League respectively, it is likely that Ronald Koeman may set his team up more defensively and with more men behind the ball for the trip to Old Trafford on Sunday in order to avoid another comprehensive loss.
The Dutchman will have put extra emphasis on making sure his players are well organised and disciplined with their defensive positioning ahead of the clash against a Red Devils team that has scored 15 goals in their first five matches of the seasons in all competitions.
While Jose Mourinho’s side may be free-scoring so far, the likes of Phil Jagielka and Ashley Williams will also know better than most defenders in the division how to deal with United’s top goalscorer Romelu Lukaku having played and trained with him on a regular basis.
Koeman will want a positive reaction
As we mentioned previously, Everton come into this match in disappointing form having lost their last three in all competitions, failing to score and conceding eight times in the process.
Koeman and his players will know that simply isn’t good enough considering the money that has been spent and the fact that the club wants to progress this season, and the Dutchman will be demanding his players show a positive response at Old Trafford on Sunday.
That determination could make things difficult for United despite their own positive start to the campaign, and they certainly could have a fight on their hands when they host the Toffees this weekend.
